Dongmakgol Sikdang, Hongcheon: The Post-Ocean World Meal You Actually Need

After a day at Vivaldi Park's Ocean World, your stomach is basically touching your spine. This is where you go: spicy stir-fried baby octopus, wrapped in lettuce with a spoonful of snail doenjang, at Dongmakgol Sikdang in Hongcheon.

Spend half a day at a water park and your body starts talking. "Food. Now. Lots."

If that water park was Ocean World at Vivaldi Park in Hongcheon, the answer to that signal is already decided: spicy stir-fried baby octopus, wrapped in lettuce with a spoonful of snail doenjang. The place is Dongmakgol Sikdang in Seo-myeon, Hongcheon.

A 30-second glossary

  • Jjukkumi โ€” webfoot octopus: a small, chewy octopus, usually stir-fried (bokkeum) in a fiery red sauce.
  • Ureong โ€” freshwater snails. Chewy, mild, and at home in doenjang.
  • Gang-doenjang โ€” a thick, concentrated soybean paste stew, made for spooning onto rice and wraps.
  • Ssam / ssambap โ€” ssam means "wrap": lettuce and other leaves filled with rice (bap) and whatever's on the table.
  • Kkaennip โ€” perilla leaves. Herby and fragrant, a cousin of Japanese shiso.
  • Ocean World โ€” the water park at Vivaldi Park resort in Hongcheon, Gangwon-do.

Here's how the table looks

Overhead shot of a table set with two black plates of stir-fried jjukkumi, wrap greens, garlic, and an earthenware pot of snail doenjang
Two plates of jjukkumi, a pile of wrap greens, and the snail doenjang.

Sit down and the red jjukkumi bokkeum arrives on black plates. Next to it: a heap of lettuce, perilla leaves, green chilies and garlic, and a small earthenware pot of snail gang-doenjang. Once the side dishes land, there isn't an empty inch on the table.

Star #1: jjukkumi bokkeum

Jjukkumi stir-fried red with onion and green onion, topped with scallions, next to a pot of snail doenjang
Glossy stir-fried jjukkumi, loaded with chewy tentacles.

The jjukkumi comes stir-fried red with onion and green onion, with chopped scallions scattered on top. The sauce is glossy, and the octopus is satisfyingly chewy. The heat hits hard up front, but that's not the end of it: a sweetness underneath keeps pulling you back for more.

Star #2: ureong ssambap

Stir-fried jjukkumi and a pot of snail doenjang next to lettuce, perilla leaves and scallions
They don't hold back on the wrap greens.
Side dishes of kimchi, seasoned greens and green chilies on the table with the jjukkumi and snail doenjang
Kimchi, seasoned greens, green chilies. Plenty of side dishes, too.

The right way to eat jjukkumi here is as a wrap.

  1. Lay a perilla leaf on top of a lettuce leaf.
  2. Add a little rice and a generous heap of jjukkumi.
  3. Top it with a spoonful of snail gang-doenjang.
  4. Add garlic or a green chili, and eat it in one bite.

Put the salty doenjang and chewy snails on top of the spicy octopus, and the heat softens while the savoriness doubles. Jjukkumi on its own and jjukkumi in a wrap taste like two completely different dishes. There's a reason it's called ureong ssambap.

Ocean World gave me a mouthful of water. Dongmakgol gave me a mouthful of rice. The second was the real highlight of the day.
