Oneuldo Bossam Kalguksu, Yangjae: Self-Serve Barley Rice and Kimchi Stew After Dark

A bossam-and-noodle house that still serves kimchi jjigae at dinner. Barley rice is self-serve and unlimited, every side dish is made in-house, and it's rated 4.85 on Naver. The Yangjae branch is the best!

Some days you just need kimchi jjigae. The problem is when that day turns into dinner.

At lunch, kimchi jjigae is everywhere. At dinner, it strangely vanishes, because so many places switch to grilled meat and drinking food for the evening. But Oneuldo Bossam Kalguksu in Yangjae-dong keeps the kimchi jjigae coming at dinner, too. And the barley rice? Self-serve.

A 30-second glossary

  • Kimchi jjigae โ€” kimchi stew: well-fermented kimchi simmered with meat into a sour, spicy broth. Korean comfort food at its most everyday.
  • Boribap โ€” rice cooked with barley. Here you mix it bibimbap-style with side dishes, gochujang and sesame oil.
  • Bossam โ€” boiled pork, sliced and eaten wrapped with kimchi and other fixings. Gabri refers to gabrisal, a pork cut from where the shoulder meets the loin.
  • Kalguksu โ€” "knife-cut noodles" in a hot broth. Here it's made with dongjuk, a small clam.
  • Banchan โ€” the side dishes that come with a Korean meal.
  • Dadaegi โ€” a spicy seasoning paste you stir in to make a soup hotter.

The kimchi jjigae comes bubbling in its own pot. Big pieces of well-fermented napa cabbage kimchi, with meat peeking out through the broth. The broth is sour and sharply spicy, and the longer it simmers, the deeper it gets, until the kimchi goes meltingly soft. At dinnertime, this was exactly what I wanted.

The secret weapon: self-serve barley rice

A notice reading 'Please use the self-serve bar for barley rice. All side dishes are made in-house'
"All side dishes are made right here in the restaurant."

There's a self-serve bar on one side of the room. The barley rice sits there in a big basin, and you scoop as much as you want. The sign reads: "๋ชจ๋“  ๋ฐ˜์ฐฌ์€ ๋งค์žฅ์—์„œ ์ง์ ‘ ๋งŒ๋“ค๊ณ  ์žˆ์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค. ๋ฐ˜์ฐฌ์€ ์…€ํ”„๋กœ ๋งˆ์Œ๊ป ์ด์šฉํ•˜์„ธ์š”!" โ€” roughly, "All side dishes are made right here in the restaurant. Help yourself to as many as you like!"

Every table has a "how to enjoy it" sign.

The sign on the table even walks you through the barley rice: add yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi), bean sprouts, gochujang and sesame oil, then mix everything evenly. Follow along and you've made your own bibimbap. A spoonful of kimchi jjigae broth on the side goes great with it, too.

The real specialty: bossam and kalguksu

As the name says, the main event here is actually bossam and kalguksu. Remember the kalguksu tip from the table sign, too: when the clams open, fish them out and eat them first; once the broth is at a rolling boil, add the noodles and cook for about 6 minutes. If you want it spicier, just ask for dadaegi.

At lunch there are specials at โ‚ฉ10,000 each: the gabri bossam set and the dongjuk kalguksu set. Value at lunch, kimchi jjigae and bossam at dinner. This place earns its keep all day.

Jayden's verdict

A place that serves kimchi jjigae at dinner is rare. One that also lets you help yourself to barley rice is a treasure.
